How to save articles for offline viewing

You may wish to browse article summaries (the headlines and descriptions that appear in the News pane) offline if, for example, you are using a dialup connection and are not currently online, or you are without an Internet connection for any other reason.

When online, RSSOwl reloads news summaries and retains them in memory each time you select a newsfeed.

When you go offline, newsfeeds you opened during the current session are saved to disk, allowing you to review the news summaries for those articles. Note: Do not reload newsfeeds while offline. Doing so causes delays while RSSOwl attempts to locate the remote URLs you are attempting to reload; an error message appears when the reload attempt fails.

Saving and reopening newsfeeds from files

You can also store selected newsfeed summaries to file for offline viewing.

To save selected newsfeeds:

• Press Ctrl+S or choose Save RSS from the File menu. A Save As dialog opens to let you save the currently selected newsfeed from the Newsheader pane. The feed is saved as an XML file to your local drive or to a network location.

To reopen a saved newsfeed:

• Choose Open from the File menu, or click Select File in the Quickview pane. This calls an Open dialog to let you locate and load a saved XML file containing a newsfeed. If the selected file is not a valid newsfeed file, an error message is displayed.
• Another method is to add a saved newsfeed file by adding it to your RSS Favorites. To do that, choose a category or newsfeed item within a category (not within a subscription) and choose New>Favorite from the file menu to open the Add New Favorite dialog. Note: The Add New Favorite dialog only permits addition of newsfeeds that do not currently exist elsewhere in your RSS Favorites tree. Thus, you can only use this method to add saved newsfeeds that were removed from the tree after they were saved.
